Middle School

“Language and communication are at the heart of the human experience. The United States must educate students who are equipped linguistically and culturally to communicate successfully in a pluralistic American society and abroad.”

The National Standards in Foreign Language Education Project

Course Description:

The French program in the Middle School is part of the core curriculum, and represents the equivalent of more than one year of High School study.

The Middle School French program is communication based and designed to help build French proficiency, both orally and in writing. For those students who have had French in the primary school, some of 6th grade will be reinforcement, but our 6-8th grade curriculum focuses more on writing, grammar and text. An important component of the French program is also to introduce students to the culture, history, geography and customs of French-speaking countries, and to instill a love, appreciation and understanding of the French language and culture.

Methodology: We use the most current methodology for teaching a foreign language, and follow the National Foreign Language Standards. We use the natural approach where French is primarily spoken in context and while doing meaningful activities. Grammar is taught but viewed as a support for accurate communication.

Each student receives the eEdition of the textbook “Discovering French” and can access the book online. This e-book offers an interactive learning experience for our students. It delivers each page of the printed text in a flexible, interactive digital format for anytime, anywhere access. Students can highlight the text and access the audio and video programs at point of use. The ebook also includes links to Classzone.com, a website that has additional activities, research links, quizzes and more.

After completing three years of Foreign Language study in the Middle School, students will have gained a strong foundation for superior levels of language proficiency, and be ready to be successful in 2nd or 3rd year high school French.
